Virtual Working Tips
Today one of our readers asked this question…
“I want to work from home, but how do I email my boss to ask for work from home”
The thing is, suggesting to your boss that you want to work from home isn’t always as simple as sending an email. In fact, just charging forward and sending an email to your boss could ruin your chances to work from home right up front! A lot depends on how forward thinking your boss is and how open your boss is to change and trying new things. It will also depend a lot on what you’re currently doing in your role and if there is flexibility for alternative work arrangements or an alternative work schedule.
You need to have a plan and adjust your tactics according to your role and circumstance. If your boss is someone not likely to consider a new way of doing things, you might like to “test the waters” by doing a small project from home demonstrating the effectiveness and benefits of a work from home agreement.
Below I have outlined 6 steps to help you with your work from home request. Continue reading
[TRUE STORY] Jane lived in Brisbane, she worked as a piano teacher, but her passion didn’t lie there. Jane also participates in a volunteer ministry helping people to have a better life now and a better hope for the future. Jane decided she wanted to travel to Malaysia and settle there for a while, with the goal of helping as many people she could in that country. Wow! That’s a big dream right?
Oh, Jane is not a rich lady!
So how could she afford to just up and move to another part of the world – volunteering to help people without any government, organisational or financial assistance? Short Answer: She started to work online from her home office.
Have you ever wanted to travel to and stay in exotic destinations, but haven’t known just HOW you can do it. Did you imagine yourself having to “scrimp and scrape”, limiting your food intake (I HAVE actually heard of people doing that), staying in rubbish accommodation and or waiting on tables just to make ends meet? How do you imagine you could travel and work online from anywhere in the world? Continue reading
Everyday we receive emails from people asking for contract on-line work – work they can do using their own computer from home. They offer services like wordprocessing, data input, email management, article writing, web-design … and the list goes on. Their messages indicate to me, that many virtual “work from home” businesses are struggling to get enough clients to make their virtual assistant business viable.
This is how the typical enquiry goes “I’ve been running my own Virtual Assistant Business from home for 3 years now. It’s a part-time business for me right now but I’d like to expand and I do have capacity to take on extra work. I’d like to apply for a contractor position within your company …”
Is that you? Are you desperately trying to break away from the office politics and set yourself up to work from home. I don’t blame you – I’ve been there. Or maybe you have already started your own business from home but are struggling to find clients and build your income. I’ve been there also, so I know how you feel. It isn’t easy right?
“Opportunities that sound too good to be true are usually scams… If something sounds too good to be true, trust your instincts”
Would you agree with this statement?
The thing is, in many circumstances I’d say I agree. But today I’m disagreeing. I’m going with – “If it sounds too good to be true – go for it!”
Now, if you’re a skeptic and have been looking for a genuine work-from-home opportunity you’re likely wary of all the online job scams out there.
Finding new clients for your virtual assistant business can be easy and fast if you know where to look. There are so many tried and tested techniques that work. Ways you can start making genuine income in your own virtual business today. Here are 7 ways, sure there’s more, but these 7 are a great place to start …
1. Past employers …
Past employers are the quickest and easiest place to find new clients. You’ve already got a relationship with them. They’ve already had a sampling of your work, they know what you do, and hopefully they like you!
When I first started out, my past employers were my very first clients. They didn’t want to lose me, so they didn’t have to. I continue to work for them – just more on my terms now.
The key here is to let your past employers know that you’re available and what it is you can do for them. As you explain the advantages of using your services, I guarantee they’ll come on board and you’ll have a ready steady stream of income!
As you start to bring in more clients to your virtual business. You’re going to need to get organised. It’s an absolute must.
The key is to be able to focus on what you do best, without having your brain cluttered with multiple”to do” lists and information. You want free and easy thinking that will give you the confidence to be creative.
As you apply the principles and strategies I share, you WILL get more clients. You WILL be handling multiple tasks. So you need to put systems in place to support you right now – before you get to that state of overwhelm.
This week I’ve been reading a book about “toxic success” and how the ideal view of success doesn’t necessarily bring us the euphoric happiness that we had hoped for.
Thinking about my own life – I remember the times when I felt so exhausted, hurried and unappreciated that I would cry. I was traveling to and from the City every day in peak hour traffic, working with a demanding boss and ridiculous deadlines. You know what I’m talking about right?? Everyday the pressure mounted. Everyday I hoped it would get better… until that sick feeling set in. That sick sinking feeling from the bottom of your gut that you just can’t face another day in the “rat race”.
I remember the day distinctly; I was standing on a corner in the city waiting for the lights to change, watching three obese business men in there black and grey suits, gabbing about their next appointment. “Ahhh, I said to myself – I can’t take this anymore, no more, I’m getting out!” Little do those three men know how they impacted my life that day. It just set something off in my mind – I didn’t want to be there – I made the decision – I just had to get out!
Many of you may have felt that way before (those of you who have escaped already), you “feel my pain” so to speak – and I am sure those of you who haven’t yet made your escape are feeling the pain NOW. Well I got out and you will too! But there are some things you need to know first:
1. You need to DECIDE to get out! Unless you decide it’s not going to happen.
2. You need to know WHY you want to get out – that will give you the motivation!
3. You need to know WHERE you are going – If you don’t know where you going, how do you get there?
4. You need to have an ESCAPE PLAN – if you don’t have an escape plan then how will you get out?
5. You need to PREPARE well for your escape plan – by preparing in advance you will ensure your success!
Change IS scary and I’ll kid you not, so is the escape. But it’s worth it! Don’t do it all at once – make the decision to be your own life architect TODAY.
Start to design your life. It’s not all going to happen today but you can start by making the DECISION.
THINGS TO DO …
• Make the decision (in your mind) you are going to “get out” – go ahead write it down – put a date next to it.
• Make a list of all the things that you want to move away from – what do you want OUT of your life.
• Make a list of all the things you want in your life (go ahead dare to dream – just write them down).
Once you know what you want you can start on your plan to get there ….
